Forklift Model Classification: Roles and Types in Enterprise Logistics and Material Handling
Forklifts are crucial for enterprise logistics operations, serving as the primary tool for material handling. They are widely used across various economic sectors, including train stations, ports, airports, factories, and warehouses, performing efficient mechanized tasks such as loading, unloading, stacking, and short-distance transportation. Self-propelled forklifts first appeared in 1917, and their development accelerated during World War II. China began manufacturing forklifts in the early 1950s, coinciding with national economic growth, which spurred the transition from manual to mechanized handling.
This shift drove significant growth in China's forklift market, which has maintained double-digit annual growth in recent years. Forklifts are typically categorized into three main types: internal combustion engine, electric, and energy storage (hybrid) forklifts.
Internal Combustion Engine Forklifts
General-Purpose Internal Combustion Forklifts: Powered by diesel, gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or natural gas engines, these models handle loads from 1.2 to 8.0 tons. They operate efficiently in wider aisles (3.5 to 5.0 meters) and are suitable for outdoor and workshop environments with fewer restrictions on emissions and noise. Their continuous operation capability makes them ideal for harsh conditions, such as rainy weather.
Heavy-Duty Forklifts: Designed for heavier cargo (10.0 to 52.0 tons), they are equipped with diesel engines and are primarily used in demanding outdoor environments like ports and the steel industry.
Container Forklifts: Powered by diesel engines, these forklifts can handle loads from 8.0 to 45.0 tons and specialize in container handling. Variants include empty container handlers, heavy container stackers, and container front-handling trucks, which are extensively used in container yards and port terminals.
Side-Loading Forklifts: Capable of loading from the side without turning, these forklifts are suitable for handling long items like timber and steel. Powered by diesel engines, they typically handle loads from 3.0 to 6.0 tons.
Electric Forklifts
Electric forklifts are powered by electric motors and batteries, with load capacities ranging from 1.0 to 4.8 tons. They operate in aisles 3.5 to 5.0 meters wide. These forklifts are favored in industries requiring low noise and low emissions, such as pharmaceuticals and food processing. To facilitate multi-shift operations, they are often equipped with spare batteries, as charging is required approximately every 8 hours.
